Off-piste Skiing
Skiers and boarders alike will revel in the powder just yards from the pistes or amongst the trees, which lasts for days thanks to Ste Foy's north-west facing slopes.
The routes on offer range from friendly open powder paddocks next to the pistes to the infamous Foglietta mountain; not for the feint hearted this off piste intinerary involves over an hour of hiking. Well you have to earn that descent through perfect, untouched powder, and those views! A more gentle option but just picturesque is the Monal Village itinerary taking you through the ancient farming hamlet; unoccupied during the winter months the Monal Village is a listed site due to its architectural, historical and geographical significance. This itinerary doesn't come free either though, with a 30 minute flat stretch at the end; not too bad on skis but tougher on a a snowboard!
Ability
If off-piste is new terrain to you, or you think you'd benefit from a little refresher, off piste lessons are available with several of the local ski schools. Alternatively if you are a total pro and just need a local to guide you around the best that Ste Foy has to offer we can arrange that too!
Equipment & Clothing
Powder skis are not essential but they do make deep powder easier to ride; they are available for hire from the local ski hire shops who will also advise you on the most suitable ski for your ability level.
Your outer clothing should be windproof and waterproof. A removable layer underneath is recommended in order to be able to adjust to different weather conditions. Good gloves are recommended and goggles (rather than sunglasses) and a hat are essential.
We also recommend that you always carry a transceiver, shovel and probe with you when skiing off-piste - and know how to use them! These are also available to hire from the local hire shops or in some cases may be provided by your guide/instructor.
